SCOTT FIGURE w TAN BGRD_edited.jpg

Hi!

My name's Scott. I'm a New Zealander living in Britain. I've been working as a writer, artist and editor since 1992. I've had work published by Marvel Comics, Panini UK, Eaglemoss, Rebellion and the BBC. I've mostly written and illustrated comics but I've also written short stories, audio plays and magazine articles. I've also worked as a storyboard artist.

I've put some of my favourite pieces on this site so please take a look around...

One of my most enjoyable experiences in comics was working with Roger Langridge on The Fin Fang Four for Marvel. It was a comedy series that revived characters from the 1950s “Monster Era” of the company.
We had a blast putting them into domestic situations where they had to interact with humans.

Growing up in New Zealand, my favourite comic was Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne. It was a fanboy dream come true to write Uncanny X-Men First Class, a series set in the same era. I worked with stellar artists Roger Cruz, David Williams, Scott Koblish and Fernando Blanco.

I did some writing for Marvel’s All-Ages line, working with Matteo Lolli on Captain America; another favourite of mine. The series reworked Cap’s storyline so he came out of deep freeze in the present-day world of social media. Hydra was using it to become uncomfortably popular in America. I also made a long-overdue moment in Marvel history with Gurihiru by producing the first-ever Lockjaw solo adventure.

I wrote some more All-Ages material for Panini UK, which had a license to publish original Marvel stories. It was a great experience working with artists John Ross and Carlos Gomez, telling stories with
Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange and Iron Man. More fanboy fun!

I had been periodically writing the comic strip in Doctor Who Magazine since 1992, and from time to time I'd provided layouts for artists when the deadlines were looking nasty. But Matildus in 2017 was the first time I had ever completely penciled and inked a Doctor Who story for the magazine. It really resurrected my love of drawing. I later met Pearl Mackie at a Doctor Who convention and mentioned that I had drawn her. “How was the hair?” she asked. “It was my favourite part!” I replied.

I was really enjoying the Jodie Whittaker era of the TV show and wanted to write/draw another story. The Mobox were aliens who had appeared several times before in the comic strip – I loved their chunky Jack Kirby-style physiques. I got to give them a design aesthetic here – clothing, vehicles, buildings, technology –which was a lot of fun.

Bruce Lee became one of my childhood heroes after I saw Enter the Dragon at the age of eight. That, coupled with my love for Milton Caniff’s classic Terry and the Pirates strip, prompted me to write and draw this story. I got to draw several martial arts fight scenes; a very rare sight in the Doctor Who world.

Big Shoulders

Big Shoulders Cover mock-up art draft 1 low res BLUE LOGO.jpg

This is an indie comic I'm pencilling and inking, working with writer
John Dudley, colourist Faz Choudhury and letterer Es Kay. It's set in present-day Chicago (the title comes from a line in the poem Chicago by Carl Sandburg). Big Shoulders is a fast-paced storyline packed with immortals, aliens, dragons, FBI agents, sinister AI and struggling rock bands. If you like what you see, please click on this link:

Croix-Noire

CROIX-NOIRE #2 PG 12.jpeg

A graphic novel work in progress. Here's a 15-page segment of an ongoing project that I'm writing, illustrating and lettering. I'm taking it as an opportunity to get more experimental with my page layouts.

This is based on a real-life war story recounted by Jack Kirby in an interview. His story conjured up visuals in my head that haunted me for years, so I decided to adapt it into a comics story.

Here are some pencil pages from a French comic, Croix-Noire. I helped out Mike Collins on an issue, working from his layouts. I love European architecture, so it was a very enjoyable job.

I wrote and edited Panini UK's Doctor Who comic strip for many years, working with such brilliant artists as Martin Geraghty, Mike Collins, John Ross, Adrian Salmon, Dan McDaidRoger Langridge and many others. All the stories are still available as collected trade paperbacks. Here are some of the covers, all beautifully illustrated by David A Roach and James Offredi.

Artwork

Here's a collection of pieces – some were for prints, others were commissions or commercial art jobs.

I drew a bunch of covers for Panini UK's Marvel line, back when Marvel was a little freer with their international licenses – here are my faves. All of these were coloured by John M Burns; a tremendous talent.

Storyboards

X-Men: Fear the Beast

FEAR THE BEAST STORYBOARDS Draft 5.jpg

Here are my storyboards for a scene from X-Men: Fear the Beast, a sadly unmade X-movie from 2016. The screenplay by Byron Burton and John Ottman focused on the Beast. With that in mind, I extended his action scenes beyond what was described. The original text of the script is shown on the right of each page.

Doctor Who: The Underwater Menace

These are some of the storyboards I drew for the Doctor Who animated blu ray release The Underwater Menace, based on a missing 1960s story starring Patrick Troughton. I had to keep in mind that the visuals were limited; the animators only had a small range of character angles, poses and expressions to choose from. There were also only a few backgrounds made for each scene. It was a really enjoyable challenge to find ways to suggest a sense of motion and depth in the storytelling.

We were working with audio recordings of the TV story, and I noticed in Part Four that there was a lengthy section which only had the sound of water rushing. It occurred to me that there was space to add a comedic moment involving Professor Zaroff’s pet octopus. I pitched it to the producer, AnneMarie Walsh, who liked it. The scene got a big laugh when the story was premiered at the British Film Institute.
